The comb-chase method: a one-pass silk press, step by step
Comb-chasing keeps each section straight and taut while the iron glides, so you need fewer passes and less heat.
What you need
- A flat iron (a 2" for the lengths, a 0.3" for roots and edges)
- A fine-tooth comb
- Heat protectant and sectioning clips
Step 1 — Start with clean, fully dry hair
Wash, condition and blow-dry until hair is completely dry. The instruction manual is clear: never use the iron on wet or damp hair. Apply a heat protectant.
Step 2 — Section small
Work in sections about 1.5" wide and 0.5" thick. Even sections heat evenly, which is what lets one pass do the job.
Step 3 — Comb just ahead of the plates
Place the comb at the root, close the iron right behind it, and move both down the section together at a slow, steady pace. The comb keeps the hair taut and detangled so the plates press it flat instead of skipping over bends.
Step 4 — One slow pass, then move on
Check the section. If it's smooth, leave it. If not, raise the temperature one step rather than going over it again and again.
Step 5 — Finish roots and edges
Use the 0.3" Mini at the hairline and nape, where a wide plate can't reach. Keep it moving; never hold it still against the skin.
